Sorry, I didn’t have a good image for this blog. I’m wiped.
Our IDP office at 826 Main St. Lafayette IN opened about ten days ago, and I’m on my third PCT, blind-knocked for reg. and supporter ID.
Pretty beat tonight, but I gotta tell three stories. Wait for them :-) [If you care, they come from Fairfield 8, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where I knocked today with an old IDP list of voter reg. IDP = Indiana Democratic Party.
So-o first of all, I knocked this door of an AA family. They were not displeased to see me. I was invided in. I registered a number of folks, including a vet who was in a wheel chir. Apparently he could not recall his SSN, so I left him (and his nephew) with an ABS (absentee ballot application) and a voter reg. form. I explained very clearly how voting works. What I REALLY LIKE about talking to older AA voters is that they view voting as critical. Once I explained that I was a volunteer, working for IDP, all was well. (IDP = Indiana Democratic Party). I have
I also chatted with a woman who had never voted before, but who was on my list. Her name was Manuella. She saw my clipboard which clearly said “Register to Vote”. Apparently she had never voted before. She seemed to be rather aware of certain trends in American politics. I made reference to what Gov. Pence had done, and of course Trump. Obviously I declared myself as a volunteer for IDP.
It turns out that I spoke today to a voter of European orign, who was rather fed up about the privatisation of the Railroad Fund. It seems that her Grandfather had been deprived of his retirement, back in the 1940s. This made me sad. (It turns out that the Republican nominee for the US Senate is Todd Young, who has said something similar.) I feld as if she was a Democrat, but she could not admit it.
I also registered a young person today. I asked him if he was old enough to vote, and he replied in the affirmative. It seems that I’m an old, stupid person, and I apologized for that. Apparently when I explained RFRA and Mike Pence, this person’s ey’s lit up. If I could explain why it is necessary to “blind knock” blue precincts, this person’s feedback is precisely why I do it., It is COMPLETELY OBVIOUS that here in Indiana, there is only ONE PARTY that is supportive of the interests of people of color, of woman, of GLBT peoole. I mean it’s so ridiculously obvious.
Let me leave you with three words here in Indiana: FIRE MIKE PENCE.
Over and out, if you are willing to help in IN-CD4, pls. email me.
