This is Honey Bun, the sweetest woozle in the world. OK, some may dispute that, but I have never met a sweeter woozle.
Honey Bun spent the first year or two of her life in a puppy mill where she was used as a breeder. She was very malnourished and neglected but we don’t think she was directly abused, as in being hit, etc. She also suffers from allergies which the vet believes was the cause for the skin issues you see in the photo at the Animal Control Center below.
A shelter volunteer, Shawn, recommended Honey Bun after we discussed what we were looking for in a woozle. She had to be good with both pooties and woozles, and not be too overbearing to our old woozle, Blaze.
You see, not long ago we had 3 woozles, all of them old, but in the past year Twister and Angel crossed the rainbow bridge. That left Blaze all alone since he and the pootie, Minnie, just tolerate each other.
We decided it was time to get a new dog. We looked at the possible shelters and decided we would go to a shelter that was not a no-kill and try and rescue a woozle that might not be adopted otherwise. That led us, on the July 4th weekend, to the Bastrop Animal Control Center.
The center was full to overflowing with woozles of many types. We weren’t set on one breed of dog but felt as though Pitties get a bad rap so were leaning in that direction. Shawn introduced us to Honey Bun, who as soon as we reached to pet her laid down and accepted our attention with evident pleasure. Although she had put on some weight since coming to the shelter she was still too thin. We found out that because they were so overcrowded and and there would be fireworks that night that always raised havoc at the shelter, some woozles would be euthanized, and that Honey Buns name had come up due to the length of time she had been there.
Well, my daugher, DaniTheET, fell in love with this sweet woozle and we decided to bring her home as foster until spayed. We would bring her back on Thursday for her spay and full adoption. Then came the news. My heart fell when they did the Heartworm test and it came back positive. I knew we could not afford the treatment but also knew that if they were considering euthanizing before, it would be certain now. To encourage us the center did not charge for the adoption or spay.
We introduced Honey Bun and Blaze gradually and it was not long before they became comfortable with one another. It didn’t take much longer for Minnie the pootie to accept that this new woozle was not a threat. Whenever Minnie fluffed up, Honey Bun would lay down flat and look away and was never aggressive towards her. In a couple of weeks Minnie was comfortable sharing her space with this new goggie.
Honey Bun has become DaniTheET’s shadow and the way they have bonded is so good for both of them. Dany has someone who has to be cared for and needs routine and Honey Bun has someone who cares so much for her.
Shawn let me know that he had set up a Go Fund Me page for heartworm treatment for adopted woozles. He was able to raise $400 for Honey Bun’s treatment for which we are extremely grateful. Unfortunately, Shawn is no longer volunteering with the Bastrop center due to disagreements with new leadership there. (He is working with another shelter in the area.) For this reason he has closed that Go Fund Me page.
We consulted with our vet on what the costs will be for treatment, tests and related care and the estimate was about $2000. So while the money we have received is greatly appreciated we do have a long way to go. Honey Bun is currently getting preliminary treatments to improve her general health and kill any heartworm eggs. The big expenses and actual heartworm treatment will being in about a month and will be in two parts. We have managed to scrape together the funds that we will need for the first half of the treatment, but still need about $700 more for the second half to come two months from now.
To try and earn some of that DaniTheET is opening an Etsy shop, PupsnPixels. She makes the cutest Pokemon bookmarks with 1st-4th generation Pokemon. Here are two sets, one is the starter set and the other is the evolution of Bulbasaur. If you have a favorite Pokemon she would be happy to take requests. I’ve added some potholders to the shop. And a Lumpy Space Princess costume I made for Halloween last year. LOL.
She will also take orders for custom sized furbutt beds, like this one she made for Honey Bun. We still have to determine the best way to ship these that
won’t cost more than the bed itself, so they aren’t in the shop yet.

UPDATE: I thought I would add an update to thank those who have donated and let everyone know that we have so far collected $235! I am blown away by the generosity of the PWB Peeps and all. A thousand thanks!
