BRUSSELS — Americans will always remember Sept. 11, 2001. Fifteen years later, the feelings of confusion, shock and loss from the deadly attack on our country are still vivid. But the next day, Sept. 12, 2001, was also historic. That was the day America’s staunchest allies stood with us in solidarity, ready to respond in America’s time of need. It was the day when our then 18 NATO allies invoked, for the first and only time in history, Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, the clause that declares that an attack on one nation is an attack on all.
This is contrast to Trump, who in the case of an attack on a NATO country would call accounting to get some numbers and then negotiate whether we follow the treaty….and you have to admit, it's a great time to squeeze some money out of an “ally", right? When it is under attack?
Or more likely, just ignore the call in order to aid Putin in destabilizing Europe.
There’s been a call to consider NATO's mission every since the Berlin Wall fell. That's a good thing. But it's one thing to consider and another to, after consideration, turn our military into a profit center or to provide a tip of the hat to an admired leader.
