From a CNN article: "Investigators have not yet talked to bombings suspect Ahmad Rahami, who was taken to a hospital for surgery after being wounded in the shootout Monday that ended in his capture. Rahami is unconscious and intubated at University Hospital in Newark and is not being moved anytime soon, Newark FBI spokesman Bob Reilly said."
Ok. I was an SICU nurse for years. I've seen a lot of gunshot wounds. This guy was shot in the leg. There are photos of him with waiting to get on the ambulance in no apparent respiratory distress -no oxygen mask- and nothing apparently wrong with his chest cavity. It cannot be that he had been hit in an artery in his leg because there would have been much more alacrity in getting him into an ambulance. It was downright leisurely. Here:
Surgery for a minor GSW is MAYBE an hour. If it was more than a 'flesh wound' then he would spend commensurate time under anesthesia.
Why is he intubated? Why is he unconscious? Why would they need him unconscious medically?
I haven’t been an active nurse for many years, so many things have changed. But some things NEVER do. One is the guiding principle of all medicine: “First, do no harm.” Now it may be there are very good reasons. But I can’t think of one good medical reason for this in the absence of that information.
If there is no good medical reason, will it affect his civil rights? I’d hate to think the FBI would do anything to screw this up.
Edit: “ Now it may be there are very good reasons. But I can’t think of one good medical reason for this in the absence of that information. “
I have that information now.
Yeah, if there were more than one or two surgeries, that is a large assault on the body and it’s systems. Most times healthy people can handle those types of injuries without ventilation. But this guy’s been eating fried chicken his whole life. And there may be security considerations in keeping him sedated. Sedation will compromise respiration and with heavy people becomes a problem. Intubation ensures delivery of sufficient oxygen and expansion of the lungs.
