Breaking the law.
I’m a pretty law-abiding citizen. Oh, I might go 1 or 2 miles per hour over the speed limit, but never more than 5. I pay my taxes, buy all required burn permits before lighting a fire, never text while driving, etc.
I tried to research the number of laws in this country but the consensus is that….no one knows, though there were estimates of over a million. In California alone there were 898 new laws added in 2017. And yet it is said, ignorance of the law is no excuse.
There is one law, however, that almost everyone, from rich to poor, male or female, tall or short, sleazy or upright, respects. Do not remove the tag from this mattress under penalty of law!!! Peek under the mattress anywhere you visit and no matter how old or new the mattress, the tag will still be there.
We are in the process of buying a new mattress so I thought of being rebellious, since our old one will be recycled. Now I am aware of the possibility that there are mattress-tag inspectors at the recycle place, but I was feeling daring, and so……….I ripped off the tag.
Now I was careful. I was alone in the house, no cars on the driveway, and no helicopters audible or visible. As long as no one in authority reads KTK, I think I’m safe
Civil disobedience is an especially important subject right now. Folks across the country are putting themselves at risk, from losing their jobs to facing arrest and even violence. I personally have never been arrested, though I’ve participated in many protest marches. IIRC the right to protest is enshrined in the First Amendment. But with the emergence of the Fox-fueled deplorables the danger has increased. I’m old and more frail than ever, but our country is at risk, so I am ready to do what’s necessary. I think this country is still subject to the rule of law.
But I’m ever optimistic. After writing this, I looked out the window and quick grabbed my camera. It’s the Rainbow Connection.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
