Received this e-mail today Chris Kennedy’s (D. IL) gubernatorial campaign:
In business, there is an obligation for the chief executive to set what the Securities and Exchange Commission calls a "tone at the top" -- a clear indication that the company will abide by moral leadership and legal standards.
The tone that Governor Rauner has set for our state as its chief executive has been the opposite. It has been a relentless attack on unions and wage earning workers. He embraces ideas which are a violation of social justice.
For-profit corporations which operate in Illinois see what he is doing and they copy his behavior. Now they are attacking the very people who need our support the most.
Nursing home workers around our state have not received a raise in more than 3 years. Now, the for-profit nursing home owners have proposed pay rates below the Chicago and Cook County minimum wage.
One of the greatest contributors to the rise of the American Dream in the 20th century was the minimum wage. That’s why I support the "Fight for $15" and why I stand with these health care workers.
This is why I was on the picket line on Friday. We need to reestablish the tone at the top and make it clear that everyone who works in our community deserves a living and fair wage. The fight for $15 is a fight which we all need to be part of.
Thank you,
Chris
