The first genetically modified apples sold in the U.S. are set to be released in stores next month. The apples, sold under the Arctic® brand will be released in 10 stores in the Midwest starting in February 2017. They will be sold as packaged apple slices. Arctic® Apples, produced by Okanagan Specialty Fruits, lack an enzyme which causes the fruit to brown when sliced, damaged, or bitten. This is accomplished by silencing the gene that expresses production of polyphenol oxidase, the enzyme responsible for browning. Arctic® Apples have received USDA and FDA approval for non-browning varieties of Granny and Golden Delicious apples, with more varieties coming soon.
