The Daily Kos front page is striking me more and more as pretty empty calories. Sort of like those "DESTROYS" videos that litter YouTube, of the format:
[Hero of Our Side]
DESTROYS/EVISCERATES/SKINS AND MAKES A “WOMAN SUIT” OUT OF (this is always in ALL CAPS)
[Hero of Their Side]
— “Rachel Maddow DESTROYS Sean Hannity!!!” (Or whatever.)
Entertaining in a click-baity sort of way, but it is not really moving the ball much for Democrats or lefty priorities generally.
I don’t need convincing that the Republicans are doing, and will continue to do, lots of reprehensible things now that they control the levers of power.
I already know that Donald Trump is a narcissistic, grandstanding blowhard.
The unvarnished truth is this: Donald Trump won — legitimately, under the current rules — the 2016 presidential election, and the Republican Party is in the most dominant position nationwide that any political party has been in since... maybe ever? They have the presidency, both houses of Congress, both houses of the state legislature in 32 f*cking states, and legislature plus governor in 25.
The Democrats, by contrast, control both houses of the legislature in just 14 states, and have complete dominance in only six.
We’ve been getting our asses kicked. This would be true even if Hillary had won.
The remedy for our troubles is figuring out how to kick their asses going forward.
That involves:
1. Figure out why we’re losing
2. Put together a plan of action to remedy those deficiencies
3. Get f*cking busy implementing that plan.
2018 is structurally going to be a tough cycle for the Dems in the Senate (we have way more vulnerable candidates than they do), but if we Democrats spend the next two years dividing our time between assuring each other of How Wonderful We Are, and How Terrible They Are, the mid-terms will be another debacle, and 2020 will be another Republican coronation.
