Help with 5th grade Math Fellows We are facing many challenges as a country and now more than ever, it’s important to celebrate cultural diversity with young minds. Black History Month is fast approaching and I would like to take my 5th grade girls to see the movie Hidden Figures. I teach math and this movie is not only relevant in a historical context but also as inspiration for young ladies who will go on to pursue careers in math, science and technology (my hope). I need your help to fund a movie day Saturday February 11, 2017. I have set a goal of $75.00 to fund the cost of tickets for 15 girls to see the movie. Every little bit helps this project become a reality. If you are in the Denver area you are more than welcome to attend with our group. I will post the movie time closer to the date of the show. I have considered that placing this on Daily Kos I would run a positive risk of over funding getting my girls to the movie. All additional funds will be donated to the Denver Urban Debate League for their annual city tournament. The league has brought the important activity of policy debate to inner city high school kids in Denver. It has been my pleasure to watch so many students gain critical skills in thinking and questioning the status quo rather than letting life happen as passive observers. We are in a critical cultural time period for students with the advent of the current presidential administration. As an activity debate is one of the most underfunded events that students participate in. Denver is fairly well known as a “sanctuary” city. The Denver Urban Debate League has a fair share of dreamers who have participated in the past and are currently part of the league. It is with so much pride I have watched these students grow from hesitant halting speakers to confident young men and women willing to speak with confidence and boldness. My own kids pictured at the top of this diary participated in the Denver Urban Debate League and I confidently say I would never coach them again after being subjected to all the techniques and skills they learned as former debaters. Thank you Kos with your help our kids will go further the this administration ever dreamed.
