Trump has effectively reframed the term fake news. It was of course originally intended to describe untrue news stories peddled by the right, but now Trump uses it attack any story he doesn’t like. It is time to re-reframe. When a conservative cites the fact that the Washington Post ran the “fake news” story on Roy Moore, we say, ‘the problem isn’t fake news, it is fake Christianity’; Conservatives doubt tapes of Trump describing his own perversions?—fake Christianity; Conservatives support Old Testament punishments?—fake Christianity. Fake Christianity enables one to believe what he or she wants to believe, which is to reaffirm their own prejudices—they want to believe Roy Moore is a white knight on a (just) crusade, the South will rise again, and that minorities are ruining their lives and America .... Fake news (the original meaning) enables them to believe what they want to believe. Call them on their fake Christianity and the fake news loses its impact.
