Today’s comic by Ruben Bolling is 2017's descent into the horrors of the distant past:
• A utilitarian argument for those for whom gender equity doesn't matter on moral grounds: An 84-page report from Citi notes:
We remain wary of the more exaggerated growth estimates driven by the simple assumption that direct female labor force participation and productivity can be raised fully to the current level of males. We also note that women currently undertake about three times more unpaid care work than men, something which conventional economic measurements fail to capture and which also creates cultural barriers to gender parity in the formal economy. Nevertheless, we estimate in this report that significant (and, in our view, achievable) reductions in workplace gender inequalities could perhaps add around 6% to GDP in the advanced economies over the course of one to two decades —-a very significant number relative to the potential of other structural reforms or to the relatively depressed growth prospects in advanced economies more generally.
• Stretching the definition of sources of energy, California could reach its 2030 50% renewables goal by 2020:
California may use 50 percent renewable electricity by 2020, a decade ahead of schedule. [...]
More than a quarter of California’s electricity already comes from renewables, according to a report from the state’s Public Utilities Commission. That’s particularly impressive because California doesn’t count large hydropower dams or nuclear power in its definition of “renewable.” Add those, and the state is currently running on 45 percent clean energy.
• Texas sheriff pondering action against driver with “Fuck You, Trump” sign in pick-up: “F--k Trump and f--k you for voting for him,” is the sticker on the back of a GMC Sierra that has Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls looking to intervene. Nehls says he has received “numerous calls regarding the offensive display” who wanted something done about it. A prosecutor told him that she could bring disorderly conduct charges and he’s checking to see if there is more he could do. Funny how you never heard about anybody demanding legal action against nasty stickers when Barack Obama was the target.
