584 volunteers! We are waiting to hear from the Wayne County Clerk’s Election Division.
In my Daily Kos story on Tuesday, BleacherBum153 asked a good question:
Since I'm pretty sure there’s no republican candidates in Detroit, why isn’t this best viewed as a local matter?
In my absence, another commenter earned a gold star for a great answer — erunyauve nailed it:
Because voting problems in Detroit probably cost us Michigan in the presidential elections. Moreover, there is an effort to get an anti-gerrymandering proposal on the ballot next year. Michigan is one of the most gerrymandered states in the country, and is the perfect example of what happens when Republicans take control of both houses (think Flint). We need every vote in Detroit, and Garlin Gilchrist is committed to fixing those voting issues.
A+.
In addition, national groups such as MoveOn, Democracy for America, and Our Revolution supported Garlin Gilchrist II for Detroit City Clerk with money in the bank and volunteers both on the phones and knocking on doors.

Today, our movement took the next step in the fight to bring trust, transparency, and accountability to the voting process in #Detroit by filing our recount petition with the Wayne County Clerk’s Elections Division. Thank you to every supporter of this movement who has volunteered thus far, and who had stepped up to help us raise the necessary funds to carry on.
We are requesting a recount of all 100 absentee vote counting boards plus an additional 60 precincts where we confirmed that voters had problems on Election Day.
We have retained one of Michigan’s foremost recount experts as our attorney and are eager to begin the process.
THIS IS NOT OVER. Stay tuned for opportunities to volunteer as a recount observer—we will need 100 volunteers to be ready. To get ahead of the game on that, sign up @ http://join.gilchristforcityclerk.com/volunteer

Thank you, everybody, for your pre-election and post-election support! Our Daily Kos-Garlin Gilchrist old ActBlue page shows we raised $780 for the campaign, and Garlin and the rest of the team and I are very thankful. We have a new ActBlue page for the recount process: The Detroit Voting Openness and Transparency Effort (VOTE) Fund.
