Minnesota became the first state to run out of federal portion of its funding for the Children's Health Insurance program, reports Governing magazine.
Oregon might have to tap into state funds to keep the program running. Gov. Kate Brown authorized the Oregon Health Authority to ensure there are no gaps in its program for the next five months, The Portland Business Journal reports.
Colorado and Virginia are sending out notices to CHIP recipients announcing an end to the program by Jan. 31 if federal funding doesn't resume, per Governing.
The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 11 states will run out of federal portion of funding by the end of the year.
This is an all-out emergency for these states. It's going to be even more panic-inducing for the hundreds of thousands of families that are going to get letters in the next few weeks telling them their children's insurance might not be there next year. It's not the holiday greeting any family should ever receive, and it's just because Republicans have decided that children should be a hostage.
