I have seen lots of fear from liberals that Doug Jones will not be able to retain his Senate seat in 2020 (before he even takes the seat), and a lot of cynical demands from Republicans that he tack strongly to the right to preserve a chance at reelection (and even a statement from one schmuck that he caucus with the Republicans).
Jones does not strike me as a dumb person. Although he will surely give it his best shot - winning the seat in the first place required enormous idealism - he probably realizes that, unless Moore runs again for the seat in 2020 and wins the primary - which doesn't at all strike me as unlikely - Jones has little chance of retaining the seat in 2020. Indeed, the very idealism that made him run in the first place may serve to keep him from cynically engaging with the toxic party trying so hard to sway him.
So Jones has everything to gain by being true to himself and loyal to the people who put him in office. As little a chance as he would have to be reelected with a liberal record, he would stand less of a chance with a compromised record that forsakes his base constituency.
And in the meantime, he can do this country a lot of good for the three long years ahead of us by casting Democratic votes in a Senate with a razor-thin Republican margin.
Drink the water in your hand, people!
