I’ve been completely off my normal schedule this week. I must say it’s been a treat. The timing of taking this week off actually turned out to be good for another reason I wasn’t planning on. I developed a pretty good cold starting last Saturday. I’m on the downward side of it now. Glad to have the week off!
I went to see the new StarWars movie “The Last Jedi” yesterday. I can’t tell you the last time I was in a movie theater. Going to movies on or close to Christmas Day used to be something I did regularly a long time ago. I couldn’t coax my love to join me. It’s not her kind of movie for a number of reasons most notably they aren’t really that good. (I know Sheldon Cooper would feel differently and I know Will Wheaton actually went to it on opening night wearing his real StarTrek uniform. Oooo!) Plus she says they have a pretty lame dialogue and then a bunch of “pew, pew, pew” and Wookiee sounds.
True. But I wanted to see this one in the movie theater so I went to a matinee showing.
I’ve seen four of the series I believe. The first one was great but I was 19 and it was 1977. I didn’t like others nearly as well and lost interest. Jar jar Binks never worked for me. He irritated the heck out of me. Little furry dudes in the forest riding jet motorcycles? Na. StarWars was too cutesy and formulaic.
This isn’t a movie review. I’m just gonna mention a few things about it. I’m sure there have been diaries reviewing “The Last Jedi.” But what persuaded me to see this one after missing half of all of them? I was convinced to see “The Last Jedi” after hearing a review of it at the end of a Fresh Air show on NPR. I liked what he said.
What the reviewer said about the StarWars movies is what I’ve thought about them too. I was ready to hear him diss this latest one, Episode VIII. He didn’t. He seemed a little reluctant not to diss it at first but ended up really liking it and said it’s the best one since the first. That did it. I had to go see it.
You know what? It is definitely the best one IMO since the first. It’s long at 2 hours 40 minutes but it didn’t seem like it. Characters were further developed and the plot lines needed flushing out. Mostly they did a really good job. Of course, there has to be some schmaltz but it wasn’t too bad. Plenty of “pew, pew, pew” naturally. Being a StarWars movie you just must have a few times of certain unbeatable defeat at hand for the resistance only to be saved at the last moment due to impossible circumstances.
Have you seen any movies lately you’ve liked? Tell me what you think about the whole StarWars movies thing. I mean it. Tell me what you really think about them. Is going to the movies a thing you do during the holiday season?
What do you want to talk about today?
