It may seem like I would be the last person to give any financial support to the Daily Kos. After all, I have often disagreed with its positions on the NRA, gun control and firearms in general.
But contrary to some beliefs, it is possible to support gun rights and women’s rights including the right to make their own decisions on their reproductive choices. I am old enough to remember the days before Roe v. Wade and the horror stories of what women endured to terminate a pregnancy.
I believe in equal rights for LGBTQ individuals and I have never felt that my marriage of nearly 30 years is in any way threatened by allowing others to make the same commitment and share in the same joy that I have every day.
I do believe it is time to end racism once and for all. I don’t mind Confederate statues nearly as much as I do the de facto segregation that occurs in far too many cities, including some that regard themselves as liberal. There are too many important people in my life, including friends, my doctor, my pharmacist and the owner of my favorite barbeque place, to do anything but embrace them all and thank them for making my life better.
I believe it is important to not only welcome people of other faiths, but to learn something about those faiths to more fully understand people’s beliefs. There is beauty to be found in all of them.
In short, I believe in America. Not the “Love it or leave it” America or the “Make America Great Again” America, but the real deal. The shining light of freedom and liberty, welcoming all who would join us. I know that living up to what we should be is hard but it’s the only way to keep America strong and set a standard for the nations of the world.
This means I believe it’s important for me to not only get the Daily Kos but to support it with what I can. So I have donated an amount equivalent to the annual dues for the NRA. After all, every civil right is equally important.
