Today Franklin D. Roosevelt is formally declared the next President of the United States. John Nance Garner will become vice president. He'll be inaugurated on March 4.
The Electoral College went for Roosevelt 472 to 59.
Voters sick of struggling under stark economic conditions since the stock market collapse of Sept. 29, 1929, chose Roosevelt in a landslide over President Herbert Hoover, seen as over-cautious and ineffective in responding to the crisis.

I’m anything but an expert. I rely a lot on Wikipedia and other web-based sources, which can contain contradictions and outright misinformation.
(For instance, the German Cabinet meeting mentioned in yesterday’s diary was actually today. Sorry!)
