Nebraska Democratic party had some good news to celebrate tonight:

Tonight, Lincoln showed that they are fed up with how Republicans are governing and are rejecting the one-party rule in our state. Voters elected Leirion Gaylor Baird and Bennie Shobe to the City Council giving Democrats the majority. Voters elected Democrat Zachary Mora James to the Airport Authority, a critical infrastructure position for the growing city.
The party has put effort into their local elections and they are reaping some well-deserved results. The election in Lincoln is a significant one. The election put the top three candidates through on the city council, and the two Democratic candidates? They finished 1-2.
The establishment of more elected local officials helps bolster Nebraska efforts in future elections, not just by building a bench but by giving residents a chance to evaluate Democratic policies on the ground.
It also means future candidates running for state offices will have friendly local faces where they need them going forward.
The candidates, who ran on many issues, including environmental and city structure, had reason to celebrate. While turnout in spring elections tends to be low, the feeling among activists is that the numbers of Democratic turnout was significantly improved.
This could be a good sign for many races around the country this fall.
