We need more Democratic officeholders to stand up and fight back against the insanity of the Republican Party and its officeholders.
Stop standing idly by while Republicans in office target the poorest people in America. Call them out for what they are doing, being polite isn’t helping anyone or anything. They must be publicly shamed for their actions and we can make it so just like Huey did. He knew how to fight back against the wealthy and the big corporations. And why was Huey so unafraid to take these forces on and do battle against them? Because he knew with whom he would stand, each and every day of his all too short life.
“I'm for the poor man — all poor men, black and white, they all gotta have a chance. They gotta have a home, a job, and a decent education for their children. 'Every man a king' — that's my slogan."
I can hear the wailing of the Republicans now once they get a taste of some Huey style political action. Let them cry for it is upon their soul for the hideous actions they have taken against the poor and minorities.
They say they don't like my methods. Well, I don't like them either. I really don't like to have to do things the way I do. I'd much rather get up before the legislature and say, 'Now this is a good law and it's for the benefit of the people, and I'd like you to vote for it in the interest of the public welfare.' Only I know that laws ain't made that way. You've got to fight fire with fire."
We will no longer turn a blind eye to their atrocities and they must be held to account!
And in the Democratic Party of today how many people can say they would not love to hear a politician say to the media and Republicans:
“Raise all the hell you want to, print what you want to. But we're going to have that medical school and every qualified poor boy can go." -Huey Long on criticism to building the new LSU medical school
“Quote me as saying that that Imperial bastard will never set foot in Louisiana, and that when I call him a [SOB] I am not using profanity, but am referring to the circumstances of his birth." -Huey Long on national Ku Klux Klan leader Dr. Hiram Evans' pledge to campaign against Long for having an "un-American attitude [toward] authority"
Perhaps one of the best political speeches ever given. One can easily substitute the Kochs, Waltons, etc. for the monied elites he references below.
"How many men ever went to a barbecue and would let one man take off the table what's intended for nine-tenths of the people to eat? The only way you will be able to feed the balance of the people is to make that man come back and bring back some of that grub he ain't got no business with.
How are you going to feed the balance of the people? What's Morgan and Baruch and Rockefeller and Mellon gonna do with all that grub? They can't eat it. They can't wear the clothes. They can't live in the house.
But when they've got everything on the God-slaving earth that they can eat and they can wear and they can live in — and all that their children can live in and wear and eat and all their children's children can use — then we've got to call Mr. Morgan and Mr. Mellon and Mr. Rockefeller back and say, 'Come back here. Put that stuff back on this table that you took away from here that you don't need. Leave something else for the American people to consume."
And here is video of him giving portions of the speech:
We need a new Huey now more than ever!
