Democrats in Mississippi made a few modest gains in municipal elections yesterday. One interesting outcome was the election of Weston Lindemann to Ward 5 Alderman in the city of Meridian. Lindemann, 20, is a part-time student and was one of the state’s two Bernie delegates. He managed to unseat a Republican incumbent, no small feat ‘round these parts. Also defeating a Republican was Democrat Fannie Johnson who won in Ward 3. Meridian re-elected their incumbent Democratic mayor as well.
The City of Philadelphia elected a Democratic mayor and Democrats won in Ward 4 and At-Large.
The City of Collins elected their first African-American woman as Mayor (Hope Magee Jones).
In Booneville, Democrats took all seats on the Board of Alderman as well as the office of Mayor.
And in Jackson, Chokwe Antwar Lumumba won the Mayor’s race with a stunning 93% of the vote. He is poised to continue the good work of his father, Chokwe Lumumba who was Mayor briefly before passing away in 2014.
