Today, a Facebook friend bragged that he didn’t watch news. Several people chimed in that they didn’t, either, and that they were not only better off, but implied they were healthier than those who do.
I was going to meander on but, being myself, decided to stop and comment,
“Respectfully, that’s rather the definition of privilege.”
He, his wife and a friend jumped and asked what I meant.
“Analogy: The people who live on the hilltop don’t need to listen to the weather report, but those in the bottoms had better know when it’s going to rain. Apply to politics, economy, crime, etc.”
My friend’s response: “Whatever.”
I’ve changed my opinion.
“Whatever” is rather the definition of privilege.
