A fascinating report showed up on Vox last week:
Psychologists surveyed hundreds of alt-right supporters. The results are unsettling.
“Unsettling” is a tame word.
Researchers Patrick Forscher of the University of Arkansas and Nour Kteily of Northwestern University surveyed 447 self-identified alt-righters and compared the results to 382 non-alt-righters.
The result that jumped off the page at me was the one in which the researchers asked the respondents to rate a list of groups and individuals based on how “evolved” they are. Pull the slider from zero (not evolved) to 100 (fully evolved) and rate ‘em as you see ‘em: whites, blacks, women, men, Mexicans, journalists, Democrats, Republicans, feminists, government employees!
The entire graphic is in the Vox story, but here are some highlights.
White people were at the top of the list, with a 91.8 score overall.
Then Americans, 88.43.
Then men, 88.47.
Skipping down with selections in order from the list...
Women, 83.12.
Donald Trump, 82.82.
Republicans, 82.78.
Jews, 73.09 (higher in the rankings than I’d have guessed).
Republicans who refused to vote for Trump, 69.85.
Black people, 64.72.
Then you start getting down to the dregs…
Democrats, 60.38.
Journalists, 58.65.
And the last 3 at the bottom of the barrel…
Feminists, 57.22.
Muslims, 55.4.
Hillary Clinton, 54.83.
Check that last one again. The most-reviled, least-human of any individual or group in the entire list.
Popular-vote-winner Hillary Clinton (for whom I happily voted in the general, though not the primary).
Is her place on the sub-human list a surprise to you?
What’s up with this result?
