To date, every attempt to create a registry of firearm ownership in the Unites States of America has led to strong, sustained opposition from every organized 2nd Amendment support group in the nation. "Slippery slope!" they cry. "If the govermnment knows who has the guns, then they'll be better able to come & confiscate them when they turn rogue," is the arguement we hear over and over. There isn't a gun owner in the country willing to send his name to Washington DC, saying "Hi, guys - I have guns!" So "we" (the people) have no "official record" of where the guns are, and that suits the gun owners just fine, thanks.
The Dreamers, however, are a TOTALLY different story. The meager benefits granted under the program, which essentially amount to (1) a work permit, which must be renewed every 2 years, and (2) the ability to apply for a driver's license without being subject to arrest and confinement, are only available to those who REGISTER WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. In other words, they MUST send Washington DC a note saying "Hi, guys - I'm a young, brown person who was brought here illegally, as a child, by my parents, and I ask for your compassion."
And now, in the most easily self-fulfilled of all prophecies, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO "COME FOR THEM!" Just like the NRA fears they'd "come for" the guns, if a registry existed. This actually works out pretty neatly for Mr. LaPierre & friends, doesn't it? Not only will a whole bunch of "those people" be deported, but they now have a shining example to support their claims about registries. I wonder if they could have asked "their" President for anything more.
On another DACA-related topic, Atturney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions (Rumple-Sessions, in my book, cuz he looks like a malevolent elf.) is apparently almost as good a liar as his boss! Claiming that a group of people, the oldest of whom is probably not yet 30 years old, are "participating" in Social Security might not have been the biggest lie he told in that speech, but it may have been the most effective in the ears of the unthinking, Fox-educated base. Just so's ya know, folks, the only way a person under the age of 35 can "participate" in Social Security is by PUTTING MONEY THEY'VE EARNED into the program. You cannot collect from the program until you've been contributing to it for 10 years (DACA was enacted only 5 years ago,) AND are (a) disabled, or (b) have reached 62 years of age. The OLDEST Dreamers are still over 30 years away from collecting Social Security benefits, so STFU, Beauregard! And, because President Obama’s Executive Order did NOT include a path to citizenship, they might NEVER be able to collect, either for disability or for retirement.
