It’s starting to look like none of the Republican Senators who should do the right thing is even considering it. The GOP is getting its extreme right-wing court.
You think it’s bad now? Roe v. Wade will be the first thing to go. Followed by voting rights, affirmative action, Unions, environmental regulations, etc. Maybe gay marriage. Can we really afford to wait for Clarence Thomas to retire (he’s 70) to bring the Court back to sanity?
It will be up to Democrats to stop a cabal of five activist justices from obliterating our rights. When Trump is out, and we have the Senate back, we’ll have the power to do just that.
Some Democrats will oppose adding seats. They’ll say it sets a dangerous precedent. Well, for its first 28 years, the Supreme Court had six justices. Then there were 7, 9, 10, 7 again, then finally 9 since 1869. I would argue that the most relevant precedent was set in 2016, with the McConnell Rule.
But won’t Republicans just “pack the court” once they’re back in power? Of course they will. But the Party of Trump will never again control the White House AND the Senate. The country is moving left. The GOP will need to moderate their platform to win elections, and by then, you know what? The Court may not seem all that liberal.
We need to start talking about this NOW. We’ve got two years to make SCOTUS expansion a legitimate campaign issue. We have no choice.
