My family came here in 1887. Not sure why we left the Isle of Skye. Maybe one of the most stunning places in the world. Google the images of it.
My famiily members like to write letters. So I know he came here with basically the shirt on his back. Worked on railroads until he got to Southern IL. My parents still live in the same town where he put down roots. He noted in one letter he put a spade in the ground and the soil was as dark as tar and he knew he could grow anything. So he did.
His son, my great grandfather would start a construction company. When I visit my parents I drive across bridges he built. This would be an example of he built really quality stuff and maybe we should be thinking of upgrading our infrastructure.
My grandfather I think is still the youngest graduate ever of the University of Illinois medical school. Only doctor in town for many years. The local paper called him the "baby doctor." Helped around 3,500 ladies have a child, including me. Pretty much the entire town.
I talk here about estates and planning for said estate. We made a lot of money. We kept the land we owned. Lots of money.
It is at this point I say this country was very, very good to us. See that first immigrant, the letter I noted above, was an open letter he wrote to the town. He was running to be a judge. He won. We didn't even wait a generation to run for office.
Hard for me to stress enough how I want more immigrants. Not less. Maybe it is having lived in DC for 15+ years before I moved back to southern Illinois. People from all over the world. Their food, music, culture, I so much miss.
I live in a town that is 97.9% white. Good friend of mine up the block from me. African American. Raised in the NYC. I noted to her once if she had seen this Trump person that said if we allow immigrants into our country there will be a taco truck on every corner. It was at this point we agreed a taco truck on the corner would be way cool. Please.
All in for immigrants …….
