E Pluribus Unum, as a de facto national motto, was adopted by an Act of Congress in 1782. It was valid until 1956 when Congress passed an act (H. J. Resolution 396), adopting "In God We Trust" as the official motto.
My, my, how times have forever changed.
"Out of many, one" no longer applies. Mainly because it portends something akin to socialism -- a horrible, nasty word that far too many modern day American's abhor.
Democracy is supposedly a system of government in which the citizens exercise power directly or elect representatives to form a governing body, sometimes referred to as "rule of the majority."
A Republic is a form of government in which the country is considered a "public matter", not the private concern or property of the rulers. A Republic is a nation governed by laws, not citizens ... although citizens are expected to participate in the passage of those laws, through a democratic process.
All very confusing, although it's worked for more than 200 years in America.
Until now.
We are no long a democracy or republic.
America is now something completely different. Depending upon semantics, we are either an oligarchy (a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes), or a A kakistocracy, a system of government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens.
I vote for the K-word, in honor of the Koch brothers, the Mercers, Sheldon Adelson, Harold Simmons, Peter Thiel, Julian Robertson, Foster Fries, Frank VanderSloot, Bob Perry, William Dore, Paul Singer, and Bill and Richard Marriott -- among others.
Thank you, Citizens United and the corrupt (or kakistocratic) Supreme Court.
America is now controlled by 'Rentiers,' i.e. a Marxist description of economic practices related to the monopolization of access to any (physical, financial, intellectual, etc.) kind of property.
They generate unheard of profits without contributing to society in any way, shape or form.
God Bless America.
So let's accept the reality. We are no longer a nation with ideals that represent E Pluribus Unum. (See the current fight against immigrants and non-Christian peoples)
The oligarchs have no interest in sharing the wealth they've earned from the advantages of the old 'out of many, one' concept. They do not believe in adding another seat at the table; they don't want to extend the ladder so those below have a chance to climb up. And worst of all, many are foisting their obsessive religious beliefs onto the citizenry.
There is no separation of church and state anymore. Those who have the gold now make the rules, regardless of how extreme their religious beliefs are.
Therefore, here are my suggestions for which new motto we should adapt for America. They are in Latin so they will disguise our true intent:
