Republicans are supremely confident in their abilities to recognize problems and mandate the proper solution. This is aided by being the least introspective breed of human on earth, with utterly zero capacity to learn from the wreckage of their past. They look forward to how great the world is going to be when they get to make their brilliant changes to make things like it used to be, even though it never was that way to begin with. They can’t be bothered with “facts” or “reality”, (with its well known liberal bias). They’re too busy inventing alternative realities with their far-more-convenient alternative facts.
In 2002, as we bumbled our way into the illegal, unnecessary and inevitably disastrous invasion of Iraq, I wondered if half of America had lost its mind. How was it possible not to recognize the lies, the folly, or even just the regional history? Why wasn’t anyone with a platform saying, “Hey stupid, stability is a good thing. Don’t undo that!”, or “We fought the Second War of Independence SPECIFICALLY in support of the right of self-determination. Let the Iraqis determine their own future.”? But the republican noise-machine hollered and screamed and waved flags and challenged the patriotism of sober-minded protesters, and the illegal war commenced. Nowadays, most republicans recognize it was folly, but most think it was a failure of execution rather than a failure of policy. (Spoiler alert; when the policy is bad, the badness of execution is inherent, even if implemented perfectly.)
Has it occurred to Republicans that their my-way-or-the-highway approach to politics spits in the face of our Founding Fathers’ model of governance? Nah. Has it occurred to them that denying citizens access to the polls is a direct attack on democracy itself? Whatever could you mean...the point of politics is to “win”, pyrrhic victory or not, right?
So to all those who are hoping that Republicans will suddenly wake up and realize how they’ve been played by the Russians, or to recognize that their cultish support of an overt bozo and career con-man is undermining the country they claim to love, you too need to WAKE UP. They will never learn.
There is but one solution, beat them at the polls. Beat them from top to bottom; from the White House to City Hall, and from the state senate to local dog catcher
Then, we should probably talk about the Constitutional Amendments we need to propose to improve upon Free and Fair Elections, Equal Protections Under the Law, Equal Access to Education, Healthcare and Connectivity as Civil Rights, etc. You know, the fundamentals of the American Dream, but updated for modern times.
