I went thru what turned out to be a fairly time consuming, major headache in sigining up for the ACA this past fall (despite paying taxes to the Treasury for 40 years my ID wouldn’t verify and experienced ACA Navigators had trouble helping me).
Tonight I canceled it. I am single and make > $48,200 and somehow to the genuises that designed this, I must be rich and therefore didn’t qualify for a subsidy. I am not rich and I can not afford $18,650/ year before it pays for anything beyond a pap or mammogram. ($1000/mo premium, $6650 deductible). Ironically, I’m a medical practitioner x 30 years, self employed. So now I’ll be takng care of people, while I don’t have health coverage.
The ACA was not affordable for me. I am not alone. There should have been a public option.
I’ve had health insurance all my life. Clicking that “terminate” button was hard. I’m scared. I am not alone. I am in the Club of Insecurity that more than 30 million fellow Americans are placed by a dysfunctional, uncaring government. Millions more are massively underinsured with crazy high deductibles.
I did sign up for Liberty Health Shares that I hope is better than nothing. It’s a health cost sharing coop. $200/month. Up to $1,000,000 in medical expenses covered excluding all pre-existing conditions. Only acute meds covered.
I feel like I am living in a banana republic.
I message my GOP Senators and Reps to go thru the motion and expect nothing of use from them.
Please Democrats do better, much better. Medicare for All. Or give us the option of using federal employee health insurance. SOMETHING! Remember all of us for whom the “Affordable Care Act” was no where near affordable and have lost our insurance now.
