The Chronicle of Higher Education is a really good source of information about all matters related to higher education. Here, you can learn about average salaries for administrators, salaries for tenure track professors, salaries for adjuncts, state level educational policy, federal level educational policy, and a variety of blogs, comments and opinions by professors, administrators, policy makers, and every so often, even student opinions. The website for the Chronicle offers some free content, but it does charge for access to some of its articles, often for the studies it does of relative costs and salaries at many different institutions. However, it will also point you to the original source, and to other places debates are happening. I have also found the Chronicle of Higher Education to be reasonably balanced in its reporting on all issues related to college and university matters.
As a former professor and someone deeply concerned about the price and quality of college education in the United States, I have always found the Chronicle to be an excellent source of information. This is the place that I turn to first for my information about cost and policy in college education. I get no financial kickback for this shameless promotion of the Chronicle - it is truly the first place I go if I want to get information about any issue related to higher education.
