So been giving this a lot of thought today...
Kavanaugh has been confirmed to SCOTUS for his entire life. Given the ages of the other conservative justices, we are looking at 30+ years of Republican control of SCOTUS. And if Justice Bader-Ginsburg passes away during the reign of Trump, it will be a 6-3 advantage.
What this means is yet to be determined. If Kavanaugh does as he promised during his confirmation hearings, it might be ok. But given his track record of lying and partisanship, I doubt that this is the case.
So what is the next step? Well, to be frank, I don't think that there really isn't one. The Republicans have won control of what is possibly the most consequential branch of government for 30+ years. Any law that is passed by a Democratic legislature can be deemed unconstitutional. Any presidential decree can be overturned with a snap of their fingers.
Even if Dems win the next 15 elections, a Republican-controlled SCOTUS can effectively prevent them from enacting any policy that they manage to pass and get signed by the President. No amount of protesting will make any kind of difference.
Depending on how bad it gets, here's a list of what I think will be overturned by the Republican majority over the next several years, based on what many Republicans have wanted for years. I do believe that we are about to enter an era of judicial activism heretofore unseen in this country.
Birthcontrol... dead or severely affected
Citizens United...still in place
Medicare/Medicaid...dead or privatized into nothingness
Separation of Church and State dead, with Christianity recognized as the official religion of the US.
LGBTQ rights...dead. Reversal of Marriage Equality act, and allowing discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.
And there will be more that I can't think of right now.
For those that voted for someone other than Clinton, THIS is the result of that vote. Elections have consequences, and the Republicans have successfully played the long game since the 70's, and now have succeeded in dominating the country not for a single election cycle, but for an entire generation. While Clinton was far from an ideal candidate, sometimes you have to just hold your nose and vote for someone that will preserve the future.
Let's hope it doesn't get as bad as I fear, but I fear that it's going to get bad, and worse than bad.
