That party died long ago, during the Bush administration. Nationalists — they are NATIONALISTS. Prejudiced, lockstep, anti-progress, anti-democracy NATIONALISTS. They purged some nonbelievers from the party this election. The process will continue.
I see here some people have been already calling them by that name. Good. “Republican” now has as much relevance and topicality in politics as “Whig party”. You have to erase any former concepts and protocols used when dealing with the old “Republican” party. The evil thing in its place does not merit them.
The American people voted Tuesday for the Dems to fight for them. It wasn’t a political thing. It was putting the power of the House of Representatives into the Dem’s hands like a powerful avenging sword and saying “Do something worthwhile!”
IF the Dem House just slipslides around, gets involved in endless internal battles, compromises with Republican shit, talks and talks and talks and talks, in effect letting that powerful sword fall to the ground unused, then the American people will assume (a lot of them do now) that the Democrats are just hot air and no action; just out to benefit the Democratic Party and its leaders. One thing the “leaders” of this party don’t seem to understand is you don’t only go into a fight you know you’re going to win, you even go into fights you damn well are pretty sure to lose, as long as you believe in the cause. Beto O’Rouke wasn’t just a likeable, intelligent, etc etc baloney, all the stupid noble traits the media gave him — he was a guy who went fullspeed into a fight he knew deep down he had no chance of winning — BUT HE FOUGHT ANYWAY. The fatcat incumbent Dems in government only think about saving what they have — they rarely go all out to fight for something they think is a lost cause.
For anybody who’s familiar with the movie “From Here To Eternity” there is a subplot where one of the main characters, a nerdy Jewish kid in the Army, has money stolen from him by the bullies in the barracks. He boldly says he’ll meet the guy who took his money, out behind the barracks that night and fight him for it. Well, about five big tough guys claim to have stolen it, and he goes out to fight the first guy and gets the shit kicked out of him. But next night he asks who’s next on the list. Then that guy goes out back and HE kicks the shit out of the kid. Then the next night he again asks who’s next. It gets to the point that one of his opponents starts wrestling with him and whispers for the kid to fall down like he got knocked out. Kid refuses, so the guy reluctantly decks him.
At this point you’re cheering on the kid in his hopeless battle not because you feel sorry for him or believe he’ll somehow win but BECAUSE HE FIGHTS WITHOUT SURRENDER.
That’s what the American public is hoping for, wanting to cheer for. Nobody likes overwhelming bullies like Trump and the Nationalist Party. Americans cheer for the plucky underdog who’s not afraid to fight, no matter how bad the odds are. If you don’t know that about Americans you have never seen an American movie, TV show or best-selling fiction book.
