I don’t really have any rules for my kitchen that I can think of, except. NO shoes on the table. That’s pretty much a rule for the whole house though. It came from my Grammy who moved to the US from Scotland in the 1920’s when she was in her 20’s. That rule is so firmly ingrained in me that I literally cannot put a pair of shoes on a table. I just can’t.
I finally figured out why when I inherited one of my grammy’s old cookbooks. The good kind you know, with fingerprints from flour and butter on most pages. I was looking up a recipe for shortbread and at one point, the book told me to go out to the bàthach (cow barn) and get a cup and a half of milk.
It hit me then that Scot’s shoes in those days walked in some yucky stuff and should never, ever be put on a kitchen table. That’s a rule that I follow to this day.
My only other rule is more about the kitchen than a kitchen rule and that is the only place anyone eats in my house is the kitchen or dining room. There is no walking around the house eating or sitting on the couch eating. I didn’t grow up with that rule, I grew up with a maid 5 days a week. Now that I’m the maid, keep the mess on the table!
Do you have any rules for your kitchen? Are they the rules you grew up with? Are they posted anywhere?
