Received this e-mail today from Rep. Jared Polis’ (D. CO) gubernatorial campaign:
Today after Jared met with Parkland shooting survivors, he called and told me that they have shown more integrity and bravery than many politicians. I am so proud that Jared is standing with them and taking on the NRA.
I believe in the Second Amendment, as do most Americans. But the Second Amendment wasn’t designed to turn loose weapons of war on innocent children in their classrooms.
As Jared has said, many Coloradans use guns lawfully for sport and protection and he has long supported the rights of law-abiding gun owners. He’s even authored commonsense legislation to ensure Coloradans who use medical marijuana don’t lose their right to own guns.
But there is nothing incompatible about taking steps to reduce gun violence and respecting the Second Amendment. From Parkland to Sandy Hook to Aurora, we cannot ignore the fact that assault weapons are a common and deadly denominator in almost every recent mass shooting.
We can’t let the NRA trick people into believing that we can’t improve gun safety AND protect our freedom. That’s why Jared and his colleagues have introduced legislation similar to the assault weapons ban that was in place from 1994 to 2004. Will you help us push Congress to take action by signing on as a citizen cosponsor of Jared’s bill?
Jared never shies away from taking on lobbyists and well-funded special interests — from standing up to telecom companies by advocating for net neutrality, to fighting the pharmaceutical industry to end price gouging. Jared has proven that he knows how to take on the gun manufacturing lobby by demanding not just words, but action on gun safety. That’s why last week, Jared outlined the bold steps he will take as governor to reduce gun violence in Colorado.
It’s time for all elected leaders to stand up to NRA lobbyists and put the safety of our communities first. Together, let’s keep working to get weapons of war off our streets and protect our communities from senseless gun violence.
Thank you,
