Many pundits, here and elsewhere, have voiced the opinion that the decision by the king from Queens to violate the JCPOA (the more popular verbiage, that we "withdrew" from the agreement, amounts to whitewashing the facts) was simply another of his whims. Like, he told us he didn't like the "deal" during the campaign, and now he's gone and pulled us out of it. I, however, see it as a more strategic move, leading me to believe that it wasn't Fred Trump's second-youngest son's idea, but someone else's altogether ... perhaps, Vladimir Putin's. Because this move helps to accomplish three goals very near and dear to whatever it is Vlad may have that passes for a heart.
1) Russia and Iran see eye-to-eye on just about everything, as far as the US is concerned. If the agreement falls apart now, due to our voilation thereof, the prohibition against ramping up the development of nuclear weapons, which all other parties to the agreement (as well as our DoD and Intelligence services) believe Iran has thus far complied with, is effectively removed. They can now become Russia's nuclear ally. "SWEET!", if your name is Vladimir Putin.
2) Russia and Iran, combined, control a large percentage of the world's oil resevres. Working together, they can effectively control the global oil market. Prices at the gas pump have already begun to rise, much to Putin's delight. John McCain called Russia "a gas station with an army," and said that if the US concentrated on developing alternative energy sources, we could bankrupt Russia within the decade. But now, we've not only de-prioritized alternative energy development, we've enabled Russia to collude with Iran to set oil prices high, and keep them there.
3) Best of all from Vlad's viewpoint, is the US separating itself from our NATO allies on this issue, as we already had on the Paris Climate Accords. The JCPOA was never a deal between the US and Iran - it's a multi-lateral agreement involving all five UN Security Council members (this group includes China and (wait for it ...) Russia!) and all EU nations. Anything that weakens NATO strengthens Russia. A wedge between America and its NATO allies is a WONDERFUL result for Mr. Putin.
So, yeah - maybe this is a crazy move ... crazy like a fox!
