Recently, there’s been a lot of stuff going on for me and in the lives of people I’ve known for years. Some of it is truly life-changing and at the same time just mind-blowing and bizarre. Then there’s what’s going on in the political realm which has caused me lately to have to mostly tune it out as it's so frustrating to watch the wanton destruction of decency and rationality wrought from pure ego selfishness spiced with a heaping bunch of white racism.
At the same time, I feel temporarily fairly helpless other than to protest and vote. I went to a small protest in town last Thursday about children being yanked from their parents at the Mexican border. I voted in the recent primaries and will vote in November. But mostly I feel like I am just a witness to it all. Things always fall apart a zillion times faster than they are built up. Destruction is easy. Creation is hard especially when it comes to building a society that is beneficial for most of us. What took hundreds of years to build can be vanquished in a few short years.
So I’ve been in a reflective mode. At times like these, I tend to revisit and reinvest in how I truly feel. The good thing is that never goes away. I see myself driving in the desert aware of the world around me as far as I can see and feel. It’s all alive. I mean it. It’s all alive...everything.
Today I’m going to post three videos all dealing with reflection and being real. They are all different but speak to the same thing really. The first is, IMO, the best version of Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot speech. Powerful as always. The visuals really do the trick. The last video is from one of the best scenes I saw on the show The Newsroom. It’s true. The middle video sandwiched between those two is Jim Carey doing his own reflecting. I hope something within them speaks to you.
