So I see that Alan Dershowitz has been trending on Twitter Monday because of a June 27, 2018 oped piece that he wrote for The Hill where he proclaimed that California Congresswoman Maxine Waters ‘does not speak for Democrats or Liberals’.
Oh yeah? Well, how’s that working out for you now? Instead, Dershowitz has become the Twitter of the Day’s laughing stock for decrying his own experiences at being shunned from his rich social circles in Martha’s Vineyard and is being discriminated against for what he thinks —
Mainly for defending Donald Trump.
Oh, but he says that he voted for Hillary Clinton and like Clinton, he stands up for Trump’s right to civil liberties:
But I have defended Trump’s civil liberties, along with those of all Americans, just as I would have defended Hillary Clinton’s civil liberties had she been elected and subjected to efforts of impeachment tor prosecution. My book, “The Case Against Impeaching Trump,” could just as easily have been the case against impeaching Hillary Clinton. Indeed, I wrote such a book about Bill Clinton, “Sexual McCarthyism: Clinton, Starr, and the Emerging Constitutional Crisis.” I am opposed to appointing a special counsel to investigate Hillary Clinton’s campaign, and I was against it for Trump. I am a liberal Democrat in politics, but a neutral civil libertarian when it comes to the Constitution.
Wha? ‘Civil libertarian when it comes to the Constitution’. All righty then. I’m certainly no lawyer — let alone a Constitutional one and I would certainly agree that we shouldn’t throw around the actions of impeaching a President lightly.
But Mr. Dershowitz, I would argue that the GOP has already done that and continues to twist and manipulate the laws, and voting rolls just to hang onto power that they truly haven’t earned. Yes the Republicans impeached Bill Clinton over sex when you strip the matter all down — no matter what they try to say otherwise.
But the bar for impeachment is high crimes and misdemeanors. Impeachment is pretty broad in scope, but I think that the Founding Fathers figured that it would be used responsibly. Just because the GOP tried to use it irresponsibly doesn’t mean that it’s off the table for Donald Trump if it is proven that he colluded with a foreign government to throw the 2016 Presidential election his way.
That’s one thing.
The other is this. Donald Trump is an utterly despicable human being. He is narcissistic in nature, a misogynist and a racist. I remember a time in the not so long ago history where America did not condone these traits — at least not in the open. Yes, there was a time when being an openingly and disgustingly egotistical misogynist and racist was the social norm.
But also wanting to be the world’s superpower made those traits unacceptable to exhibit — at least not in public.
You see Mr. Dershowitz, you are mixing up socially unacceptable and aberrant behavior with ‘the violation of one’s civil liberties’. Also it would appear that such civil liberties trumps even criminal behavior as far as you are concerned.
But I think that a lot of Americans are fed up with the lying. They are fed up with the openingly brazen abuses of power while on the taxpayer’s dime.
Americans are fed up with a leader who openingly and without no shame promotes state sponsored child abuse. A lot of Americans are embarrassed by a President who calls other countries shit holes, says that terroristically bigoted individuals are ‘fine people’ and openingly promotes an enemies list of anyone who doesn’t agree with them — from professional athletes to a political party to the press.
Americans don’t like it when his surrogates and supporters openingly call for assassinating members of the press — or Congress.
That’s a bridge too far in the name of ‘Political Correctness’.
Part of the blame can be placed on the media itself by allowing such hate speak to become normalized, which makes it laughable that when Maxine Waters called for us to stand up to this form of hatred, the hypocritical pearl clutches came out in force about being civil.
Fukk that. You cannot be civil to hate or promoters of hate. They have no place in our lives or social circles. Hate cannot occupy the same space as love, decency and respect.
So Alan, if you are being shunned, maybe you need to look in the mirror and re-evaluate your life.
