- California Gov. Jerry Brown signs 100% renewables bill: California state Sen. and U.S. Senate candidate Kevin De León was beaming at a press conference this morning where Jerry Brown, whom he called the “greatest governor in the history of the state of California” signed SB100, the hard-won bill mandating that California get all its electricity from renewable energy by 2045. That bill has capped a decade and a half of bills that began in 2002 to require that ever greater amounts of the state’s electricity be generated by solar, wind, geothermal, and other renewable sources. Every step of the way,the naysayers have attacked, arguing in 2002 that getting California to just 20 percent renewables was an impossible fairy tale. Brown’s move makes California and Hawai’i, which has the same goal—100% by 2045—the only two states so far to take this crucial step. Brown conceded in his brief announcement that California “has miles to go” to make this happen. SB100 is a very big deal since, if it were nation-state, California would rank as the fifth largest economy in the world. Democratic leaders in other states are pondering similar moves. And Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders have introduced a bill mandating 100% renewables for the entire nation. Not enough praise can be lauded on a long-time member of Daily Kos, RL Miller, who has been a leading voice in the grassroots effort to bring this bill to reality. —Meteor Blades
