It was one of the last houses on my list, canvassing in a close congressional race. The door was covered with stickers, mostly with right-wing cultural vibes. The 50-ish guy who came to the door looked pretty damn skeptical but he invited me in. Our canvassing rules say never to go in. So I went in. He said he did know a lot about the race. I congratulated him on being one of the 5% who said that. He said he wasn’t happy with our congressman. (Rodney Davis, IL-13). But the guy said that I must hate him because he (the guy) is a Trump supporter. I said I hated Trump but not him. He showed a picture of Trump, and a big poster of a woman in a bikini. I congratulated him on his taste. I said something about how Betsy Londrigan wants to protect Medicare, pre-existing condition protections, etc. He asked how he could help. We settled on a yard sign. He said “That’ll piss off Davis. I’m a Republican.”
Then (the rules say we shouldn’t digress and talk about other subjects) I digressed and said that as a scientist I couldn’t stand Trump’s denial of global warming. The dude agreed completely, said he would write Trump about that. I said Trump threw out the Iran deal, and I knew the technical experts who had made sure that it was solid in protecting against Iranian nukes. He said he’d look into that.
Then on to the next door.
One more vote, one more yard sign.
Get out there and do it.
