I’ve finally moved into transitional housing. It’s a lovely accessible apartment that was already set up for deafness, with flashy lights everywhere. It has wide doorways and low countertops should I get a wheelchair. The bathroom is fully equipped with well-thought-out grab-bars, which I’m very grateful for! I even have some very nice low window seats/bay windows in the kitchen and living room for airiness and light. It costs 47% of my SSI every month, not including some utilities (BRAP said it would be no more than 30% when I signed up for the voucher, this changed after I signed the lease, but it changed from BRAP, not my landlord!).
One of my case manager’s current goals is to get my car in working order. I’ll find out more about where that stands when we meet next. He’s also very pleased at my improved mental health—a lot of my stress was environmental. I’m not worried about heat, shelter, water... I can’t begin to describe how good that feels!
My LPN came down from my old area and helped me grocery shop yesterday. My cupboards had been bare and I was pretty stressed over it, and shopping wasn’t easy. I kept having trouble focusing due to the crowds and with my back and leg pain it was difficult to walk. She made sure I didn’t have full-blown panic attacks and helped with the heaviest items, like the turkey. Even though I didn’t get everything on my list, I spent a bit more than I was planning, due to the holiday! I’ll be set until next month, which is the important thing.
I’ve also had a hysterectomy and am pretty far along in the healing process. While unpacking has been necessarily slow, it has been steady, and things are looking so good! I can’t wait until I get everything finished, but you can already see the shape of it, even though there’s still boxes in closets and such.
I’m safe, happy, and set for at least a year. Thank you, everyone!
