I’m really bummed about Senator Harris. She was my top pick for the President. I will move on and eventually vote for whoever wins the nomination but my heart is no longer in the primary.
One of things that keeps irritating me is the number of people who keep suggesting other jobs that Senator Harris could do instead. Attorney General being one. Even when she was running, I read all over the place while she would be great at x or y or z.
I get that people mean well but it’s one of those micro-aggression that so many of us women and POC hear all the time. She wasn’t running for Attorney General or VP or a cabinet position or whatever else you try to slot her in. She was running for President of the United States.
Often women and POC can’t break the glass ceiling because the top position is still carved out for white men. You can be great at your job, amazing even but when it comes time for leadership roles, nope. Sure they will carve out a supporting role. Usually it’s a role where you get to do lots of work without the perks of being the “face” of the company.
Yes, I know that other candidates have been hypothetically nominated for other positions. But the difference is that if you are white male in this country, people will give you a serious glance and consideration, regardless of your age, experience, gaffes, glaring problems.
The bar for people of color and women has always been slightly higher. I will give you an example:
Pete Buttigieg has been praised all throughout the media for what a smart man he is and look at his credentials. Oh and did you know he was a Rhode Scholar.
You know who else is a Rhode Scholar: Cory Booker. You know who else is a mayor: Cory Booker You know who else went to an Ivy League: Cory Booker. Yet only one of them is surging in the polls.
I will take my heavy heart and mourn in peace but this primary has thoroughly disappointed me.
I fixed my title since people can’t get passed a spelling mistake.
