It seems like a small issue — but think about it: calling the small elephant by the D____ word is an insulting name, a slur against his different looks (oversized floppy ears). His mother named him “Jumbo Jr.” and that is what we all should call him.
Nowhere in the original Disney movie does the little Elephant do anything stupid. Why are we all (...I see you Disney and Tim Burton in your remake!!! ...) calling an infant creature who is just learning about the world and his own abilities a dummy? And why do we all for a hateful name to define the main character (who is a minor after all)?
I am writing this diary because my views were changed on this by a small boy with autism who asked me why they were calling him Dumbo when that was not his name. It turns out the little ones with differences pay very close attention to some things and notice. Bullying is noticed by the less powerful. What a shame it is that Disney is promoting bullying with this movie.
On behalf of that small child, I ask you to call the small elephant, Jumbo Jr. We all deserve to be called by the names we choose (not the insulting names others apply to us).
