Donald Trump is reportedly thinking about live-tweeting the Democratic debates on June 26 and 27. The plan is tentative, The Wall Street Journal reports, and Trump might change his mind.
If Trump does live-tweet the debates, “His posts could provide instant responses as well as insights into which attacks he feels most acutely,” which could give Democrats some useful information. A tweet or two from him could also elevate a candidate who’s been struggling to gain attention in the crowded Democratic primary. And if Trump starts out tweeting but doesn’t finish the job, what will that say about his stamina and attention span? (Answer: nothing we don't already know, but some people can always use the reminder.)
But Trump would be likely to draw disproportionate media attention, with his lies and insults distracting from the substance of the debate. That’s a test the U.S. political media has repeatedly shown itself unready to handle.
Will he do it? Trump’s advisers are likely working to dissuade him, but no one—including Trump himself—will really know for sure until the debates happen and he follows through on the whim of the moment, whatever it may be.
