Over the weekend, Kamala Harris spoke at MoveOn’s Big Ideas forum where her big idea was her innovative equal pay plan, which puts the onus on corporations to show that they are not discriminating by gender, rather than forcing women to show that they have been discriminated against.
Her plan is gaining attention across the country, including in crucial early state New Hampshire, where 2018 Democratic gubernatorial candidate Molly Kelly approves.
Kelly, who has not endorsed a presidential candidate in the primary, issued a statement through the campaign voicing her support for the plan.
“The gender pay gap is a serious economic problem for many New Hampshire women,” Kelly, of Harrisville, said. “To combat it, Kamala’s visionary new plan will ensure both accountability and transparency from businesses. This proposal is a huge step in the right direction for all women. It’s about time.”
One of the things I like about Kamala’s policy approach is that she turns the tables: Kamala wants the burden to be on the powerful, rather than those marginalized by the problem at hand. Here, instead of women having to fight for the pay they are owed, Kamala wants corporations to prove that they are not discriminating. That approach is truly #ForThePeople.
While presenting her equal pay plan at the Big Ideas forum, Kamala was interrupted by an animal rights protestor. Her husband, Doug, sprang into action, a look of righteous anger flashing on his face as he helped escort the protestor off the stage.
Who is Douglas Emhoff? CNN did a piece on Kamala’s hubby:
But it was hard to miss Emhoff's outraged scowl as he and several other men hustled the man off stage, as Emhoff reached in to wrestle his wife's microphone out of the protester's hand.
It was a protective gesture by Emhoff, an attorney with DLA Piper who identifies himself on Twitter as a "dad, @kamalaharris hubby/stan, lawyer" and "wannabe golfer." The sight of a husband rushing to defend his wife was a relatable, but also complex, moment for the female candidate, who has defined herself as a fierce potential adversary for President Donald Trump -- one who needs no protection.
MoveOn’s Karine Jean-Pierre had courageously stepped between the protestor and Kamala on stage, and after the event, Kamala called her to thank her and check on how she was doing.
Some cool behind the scenes conversations from this weekend:

Camp Kamala
At Camp Kamala, a nationwide 8-week volunteer training program, we’ve been learning about the power of your personal story and how to develop your personal story into formats that are easily shared. Here’s a key slide from last week’s session. If you missed the sessions, you can always watch the videos and look through the slides and resources at the Camp Kamala page. We’ve got 6 more weeks of Camp Kamala, so sign up here for Session 3 this Wednesday.
One of the assignments from the last Camp Kamala session was to make a one sentence, 7 second selfie video stating why you support Kamala. Here’s Andrew Gauthier, the campaign’s director of video, explaining the project. Looks like he’s going to make a fun montage of supporter stories — make your 7 second selfie video and send it in to camp@kamalaharris.org! The Camp Kamala facebook group has been a lot of fun this week with people posting their short videos of why they support Kamala.
So get involved in this campaign #ForThePeople. Kamala wants you to!

Group Guidelines
The Kamala2020 community group has been created to positively support Senator Kamala Harris, and not to engage in negativity towards other community members or any other Democrats running in the 2020 primaries.
All should be made to feel welcomed here. What’s not welcomed here is petty bickering over any of our preferred candidates, or personal attacks on fellow Democrats. We’re not responsible for the actions of others who may offend, insult or attempt to sow discord and disunity — that’s on them.
What we are responsible for are our own words and actions — that’s 100% on us.
I’d like to ask all group members, as well as those dropping by who support or are interested in Kamala’s bid for the nomination, that we not respond to negativity from other campaign’s supporters with negativity. Let’s do better than our best and respond with respect, or try to hold our peace. Recipes and cat pics work, too
😃
Doing no harm costs us nothing... pie-fights will cost us everything.
Good Morning, Joyful Warriors.
