Now we know why Mick Mulvaney isn't bothered by being the "acting" chief of staff to the occupier of the Oval Office instead of the permanent, official one. It means he's getting paid a lot more than he would if he left his nominal job of director of the Office of Management and Budget and became the official chief of staff.
The Wall Street Journal reports that with an annual salary of $203,500, Mulvaney is making tens of thousands more than his predecessors, Reince Priebus and John Kelly, who were each paid $179,700 annually. Mulvaney is getting the congressionally approved salary for the OMB director, which he still technically is, since he didn't have to resign to do this other job. If Mulvaney were to "leave" that job and become the actual chief of staff instead of the acting one, he'd be paid $183,000 annually.
When he was asked a few months ago why he was hanging on to the OMB title and not moving into the West Wing permanently, Mulvaney said being the acting chief "gives me more flexibility. Do you understand that? I like 'acting.'" That extra $20,500 a year gives him some flexibility too, I'd bet.
It's all grift, all theft from the taxpayer, all the way down.
