We don’t need you in the Democratic primary race for president.
On the surface, we don’t need another billionaire businessman in the White House. We’ve tried that and it did not work out well.
Oh, I know you’re not Donald Trump. I’ve seen nothing that indicates you’re a sexual predator. I know of no self-dealing from any foundation you’ve founded. I’m pretty sure you can read. You don’t seem to lean toward white supremacy. If you’ve paid off any porn stars, you did it competently enough that we haven’t heard about it.
I know you have been a progressive and have put your money where your mouth is.
However, why on earth would you want to run for president? You are at peak influence in the political discourse of this nation. Your ad campaign for impeachment may not have yielded an actual inquiry, but it has moved the Overton window. When you use your considerable resources to highlight causes, you’re doing good. You are doing the most good that money can do.
Money is what you bring to the table. And money is what we don’t need more of in the presidential primary.
Let the people fund the campaigns. You want to dump in $150 million of your own money to move yourself to the front of the queue. I doubt it will work, and you could plow that $150 million into anti-Trump ads and positive issue ads to help the eventual Democratic nominee end Trump’s presidency.
That’s how you can help save America.
You don’t have a constituency for president.
Exactly what group can you represent? Billionaires? Megalomaniacs? You think there are enough of those votes out there?
We’ve got entirely enough candidates already in the race. We’ve got Democratic socialists. We’ve got centrists. We’ve got conservadems. We’ve even got an entrepreneur. We’ve got a moonbeam whisperer. We’ve got a climate change warrior. We’ve got people of color. We’ve got people who speak Spanish. We’ve got old white guys. We’ve got mayors and senators and congresspeople and political outsiders.
When the primary voting gets going, the American people are going to have a truly diverse field to choose from. Nobody is complaining about not having enough candidates to choose from.
Stand down, Mr. Steyer. We may need your help later on — though not as nominee.
The important thing is to avoid subjecting America to another four years of Trump. This is an existential crisis. Please help where you can be effective.
Don’t run for president.
