Like many Democrats, I am worn out and disgusted by the Senate Impeachment trial, grinding to a venial halt. The Republican Senators collectively put their fingers in their ears and cry lalalala, I don’t hear you as they refuse to actually hold a trial and subpoena documents or witnesses. I know the Supreme Court is headed by a corporate coward controlled by the Catholic Church, determined to undermine healthcare and a woman’s right to choose, so I don’t expect anything from Chief “Justice” John Roberts. I know Donald Trump will emerge triumphant, and for my mental health, I just can’t watch it any more. I dread the Super Bowl and very likely will chose to not watch if Trump and Melania come to gloat. I will not turn on the State of the Union Address to listen to the lying chaos.
So what should I do with all my free time? What will I do to heal the world, to lance the pus filled boil which is Trumpism? I need to make specific, actionable plans to counteract the big money politicians buying our elections. I recommend others write down their positive specific actions and in a month or so, share an update. Illegitimi non carborundum en.wikipedia.org/.…
January 31 I will make my first political contributions in Presidential Primaries. I have focused my energy locally to this point. I will also send Ilhan Omar a contribution to support her for speaking out in Congress about Elliott Abrams. I will volunteer to help reelect Senator Tina Smith.
February 4 I will attend my local District 38 DFL meeting and bring some healthful snacks. I will sign up for small but regular contributions to DFL candidates for 38A and B and State Senate through ActBlue. More importantly, I will volunteer to phone bank and knock on doors for these candidates. I will figure out the Minnesota Caucus process by attending this meeting. I will also get a voter registration table at Century College near my home, to try and get students registered before the primary.
February 11 I will go to State Capitol with Moms Demand Action to the Welcome Back Minnesota Senators and Representatives. This issue is critical to me, and I only support gun sense candidates. This requires some sacrifice for me, as I had planned an outing with quilting friends that day. However, I need to set priorities to take positive action.
February 25 I will attend the DFL caucus and participate/volunteer if possible. This will be a first for me, but I want to make sure Minnesota stays Blue. Local turnout drives national turnout. Turnout will win our elections and rid us of Trump and his servants.I may not be able to if this conflicts with spouse’s AFIB procedure at VA.
March 3 I will vote in my Minnesota Primary on super Tuesday as soon as I make up my mind who to vote for. Of course, I will vote Blue no matter Who in the general election. I will keep attending protests and lobbying as the opportunity presents itself. I can get to the State Capital in 30 minutes and know where to park now!
I will also work on my Mountaintop Removal Protest Quilt in order to submit it for a summer quilt show. I will continue my work with volunteer groups in the arts. I am making quilts for others and helping individuals write arts and food justice grants. I actually find making stuff to be positive and self-affirming. I am also supporting others in the arts when I shop locally and take classes from other artists.
