I’m helping a US Rep. make the most of the last few weeks of this term and lining things up for the next term. There’s so much that needs to be done and only so much that can be done, and I need help identifying what needs to be on which list. What’s immediately actionable, what’s inspirational, what meaningful steps can be taken behind the scenes, what can be slipped into any remaining budget bills, is there someone specific I should talk to about process or a particular topic, how do I even find things being worked on, etc.
There’s a massive wealth of great ideas and people who know what atoms make up the nuts and bolts of the day-to-day operations of Congress on this site, and I stumbled into a position where I can put those ideas in front of someone willing to take action.
So please help me out.
What topics/ideas can we look at, and what things can we do in the last active week of the term? Random topics in the back of my head that I’ve seen here include:
- DC Statehood
- Something something about creating a bank account for every citizen that the treasury can use to just distribute things like stimulus checks without printing and mailing paper checks
- Fixing the post office by removing the pension prefunding requirement
- Allowing the post office to do local banking and other products/services
- Stimulus stuff, including providing stimulus checks to people who get a COVID vaccine
- Funding for research, including rebuilding Arecibo or putting money into other research projects/hardware
Is there anything crazy that can be created or fixed by slipping a single un-assuming sentence in a currently debated bill?
Please post in the comments or send me a direct message. I’ll be checking in and responding periodically.
(Semi-unrelated, but of new interest… Is there a way to “Moneyball” a team in the future to really get some interesting things across the finish line?)
