In case anyone missed it, near the end of the last debate Chuck Todd asked all of the candidates for the Democratic nomination this question:
"There’s a very good chance none of you are going to have enough delegates at the Democratic National Convention to clinch this nomination," said Todd. "If that happens, I want all of your opinions on this, should the person with the most delegates at the end of this primary season be the nominee even if they are short of a majority?"
I am all but certain that if the delegate leader going into the convention was expected to be Biden or another centrist candidate, the media would not even bother asking such a question. But, with Bernie looking like he may well garner the most delegates coming out of the primaries, the media feels like this is a burning question.
The really disturbing thing about this is not the question itself, but that everyone on the debate stage--with the exception of Bernie--effectively said that NO, THE PERSON WITH THE MOST DELEGATES SHOULD NOT BE THE NOMINEE.
In fact, everyone on stage in the last debate clearly expects for Bernie to have the most delegates going into the convention. And, all of the other candidates have now openly admitted that they are willing to set aside the will of the people in each state in favor of allowing the DNC to install the nominee of THEIR CHOICE. Their choice would probably be the candidate who would be most likely to keep the money flowing into the political operatives in Washington, keep the lobbyist money pouring in, and change as little about the current system as possible.
I have been warning about this for months now and here we are. The corporate media and the Democratic party have officially begun the process of normalizing the idea of a brokered convention whereby the so called party elites effectively hand the nomination to the person of their choosing.
In case you are wondering, the person with the most delegates going into the convention has typically received the nomination (at least in recent history). That being said, there was a brokered Democratic convention back in 1968 and that didn’t turn out very well for the party at all.
I have said before that I would support the candidate with the most delegates going into the convention--whoever that is. But, you can bet that progressives won’t take it lying down if the DNC replaces a delegate count winner Bernie Sanders with someone else at the convention. That would result in an all out war within the party.
