While I’m only an armchair pundit, I’ve been wondering whom Joe Biden, assuming that he earns the Democratic nomination, will likely select as his running mate. This is not an assessment of personal preferences (for example, I adore Sen. Booker, and I also like Gillibrand). Rather, this is what I think he’ll do for strategic reasons.
It seems to me that both Senator Amy Klobuchar and Senator Kamala Harris are likely choices, but that he’ll select Klobuchar for a number of reasons. First, she can help him in the midwest — the states that are crucial — Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc. Also, in his recent interview with Lawrence O’Donnell, Biden noted that he wanted someone who shares his policy priorities and who has strong skills on the debate stage. Remember, it’s usually the veep candidate that becomes the articulate, fierce, and determined surrogate so that the top candidate can keep smiling above the fray.
Senator Harris is also an incredibly articulate, fierce and determined candidate. However, Klobuchar has more experience in the Senate, which will likely make Joe more comfortable. Also, it seems that Biden will not need help in deep-blue California, and he can carry African-American votes through his own relationships and record. On the other hand, Harris could make a nice coalition balance for the ticket.
I also looked up Democratic women governors, but I am not familiar with them. Happy to hear your insight.
I’m aware that many of my fellow Democrats would like to see a progressive, such as Warren. However, I am fairly certain that this is a nonstarter. First, Warren is just too dynamic to take on the role of Vice President. Second, her style and perspective are just a bit too much misaligned from Biden. To me, they seem to have different temperaments. Third, Biden was able to carry Massachusetts on his own, and he’ll likely take it in the Electoral College. Finally, of course, age is a consideration.
Frankly, in my own view, I’d like to see Harris on the US Supreme Court or as Attorney General. I feel the same way about Elizabeth Warren. Assuming a Democratic victory after we all UNITE, the DOJ is going to need a major top to bottom overhaul. I’d also like us to say bye-bye to Justice Thomas and give RBG a chance to put her feet up!
So I raise this question through this diary, as I’m curious as to your thoughts. Remember, this is a question primarily on strategy.
