From The Hill:
A federal judge in California ruled that a law requiring background checks to purchase ammunition violates the Second Amendment.
Voters approved toughening California firearms laws to include background checks on ammo purchases in 2016, and the restrictions took effect last July. The California Rifle & Pistol Association filed a lawsuit against the state shortly after.
U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez called the law “onerous and convoluted” and “constitutionally defective.”
“The experiment has been tried. The casualties have been counted. California’s new ammunition background check law misfires and the Second Amendment rights of California citizens have been gravely injured,” Benitez, a Bush appointee, wrote in the ruling.
What the fuck? "The casualties have been counted?" What kind of monstrous language is this? Are gun owners lying dead in the streets because they couldn't buy 10,000 shells on their last jaunt to the gun store? This is insanity. We don't live in a functioning democracy. That's crystal clear now. We literally, and I mean that literally, can't function at this point
Given what McConnell is surely going to do with federal judges over the next 8 months, I see only one remedy if Biden wins [edit: and we retake the Senate]: pack the ever-living crap out of the courts. 11 Supreme Court judges and double the number of district court judges. If it requires 60 votes, kill the filibuster (kill it anyway - we'll need it gone for any climate-change related legislation and anything else normal, decent societies need to exist). We can't afford to genteely wait 30-40 years for these pieces of shit to croak.
If Biden doesn't win, well, I can't even go there in a diary. Let's just say "existential" will be the word of the year in 2021.
